VAMSA’S Just like there is vamsa in the material life, there is vamsa in the spiritual lineages. Not all the gurus who are spiritual enlightened can form the vamsa. For example the dasanami order of the saints in India is a great lineage formed by the great shankaracharya. The vamsa formed by the great madhva charya is asta mata of mardwa lineage which is a very great lineage. In the modern times the vamsa that was formed by swami ramdass of kanchakadu and the other one was by swami muktanada. In Buddhism the gelug school and the great kagyu lineage of the milarepa are great spiritual vamsas. For example ramana maharishi does not have spiritual successor. The great bhagwan nityanadna did not have any official successor for him. First thing a great master has great disciples. See the life of Ramakrishna paramahamsa he was a great man who had worthy disciples. This is common pattern seen in the spiritual lineage. A great master has great students and they in turn will have less talented student. Like this every successive generation are not so good like the earlier generations. See the Ramakrishna order. They are organized, rich, famous and well known. But do they have a great saint in the lineage. It is questionable. Of course lot of horizontal growth happens. For example schools, hospitals, propagation of faiths, festivals and celebrations happen through the spiritual lineage. Meditation and deep meditation experience is not stressed so much because it disturbs the hierarchy and structures protocol. I met swami madhuranada who had very intense meditations and found structure and routine of Ramakrishna order too stifling. If one wants to grow in spiritual life one needs a live wire master whose battery is huge, whose antakarna has access to divine messages. He will have a live sadhana with a tradition of search and sincerity in daily practice. Alive master and live tradition is one of great blessing of samsara.
