Many people want to be spiritual. There is nothing wrong in having ideals and aspiration which is part of every human life. If one understands the spiritual pattern then it becomes easier to align with our nature. One’s own swabhava must be aligned with reality. Spirituality happens in patterns. These patterns happen many a times just that people do not see common thread in it.

Guru – you go in search of a guru or guru comes in search of you. For example in milarepa case he went in search of the guru. The entire kagyu lineage the spiritual pattern is the disciple will go in search of guru. In the case of Adi Shankara he went in search of his disciples including madan mishra whose wife debates Adi Shankara and forces him to experience sexual life.

Caliber of the guru- this is directly proportional to the level of soul evolution of the sadhak. For example many people aspire to have a guru to the level of Ramakrishna or bhagwan nityanada. One needs that level of energy to hold onto the teacher. It is the gift of god to see such a being of light. Some meet their guru at a very early age of their life and some meet the guru very late in their life. What ever happens the real guru will start making you move in to sadhana one way or the other. His words, action and meetings will be like a light house which will get resonated in life. For example Swami Muktananda met his guru Bhagwan Nityananda first and then only in his late 40s did he go back to him. Many guru use their disciples for public relation marketing and brand building which is ok for a start. In the later stages in life the sadhakas should get involved in meditation and spiritual practices.

The age of spiritual life – many great guru who are meant to serve humanity will become spiritual very early in their life. For example the great bhagawan ramana or sai baba came less than the age of 18. Then people like appar who came into spirituality almost at the age of 70. The great manickavasagar came in to spiritual life at the age of 40.

How they give up – most of them give up in one go. The great Adi Shankara gave up his worldly life with his mother promise. The great manickavasagar gave up when he built the temple for lord Shiva. Either they have every thing and give up. Examples are the kings who made the renunciation. Then there are people who have problems, give up materialistic world and take up spirituality. For example Swami Ramdas who had debts. Some people have great disease like the appar whose ailments got cured after he worshipped lord shiva.

Call of spirituality – a sudden crisis or a problem forces people to get into spiritual life. For example in the great milarepa case he indulges in black magic which makes him regret his action. In Swami Vivekananda’s case he asks his guru “have you seen god” and the answer just shakes his being. In swami ramdas case he borrows lot of money loses in business and force to take sanyasa. Every great soul has a call for spiritual life. They have huge appetite for god, meditation and higher things in life. Just like people have appetite for material things like car houses etc.

House holder or sanayasa- this is also a pattern. For example Ramakrishna or the great vimlakirti of the Buddhist tradition lived as a house holder. For me personally I used to hold sanyasa as higher. But as long you get time for meditation or family structure does not create problems then being house holder is alright. Sanayas is useful depends on the calling of a person. If one can meditate for 4 hours then one’s spiritual life can blossom any were.

Normal pattern of spirituality

  • Some people become spiritual after the age of 40. At one level going to temple, attending discourses and reading books or scriptures is considered very spiritual.
  • The second level of people has a guru follow a tradition then they have sadhana. This is modern new age style
  • There is third level of people who have a deity and they do upsana .
  • Some of practice arts like astrology or medicine or dance or music and then they use there spare time in the spiritual sadhana.
  • Some people attend bhajan and then do some social service which is also good.

Work – many a times work become their spiritual life. For example the great Thyagaraja had the music as his profession and then used it for spiritual practice. For example some one can be painter, dancer or musician or astrologer who can integrate there spiritual practice and daily work.

Levels of sadhana – this is directly proportional to certain factors. If ancestors have been pious and spiritual then sadhana taking of will be easy. One has to break the family hold in spiritual life. Many people just follow some routines instead of sincerely seeking the answer. For example if the father is test player then it is easy for the son to play ranji trophy. If father is a musician then it is easy for the son to become a musician. In the same spiritual life requires some backing of kutmaba , vamsa, jati and varana . It is easier to meditate if one is a Brahmin. It is easier to meditate if one is born close to spiritual places like sri rengam or sri sailam.

Spiritual clusters- when a great being of light is born number of people will be there along with him. For example Christ has 12 apostles whose energy got lifted due to the presence of Christ. For example Bhagawan Nityananda helped Swami Muktananda who established a great tradition. The great teachers are like central deity in a mandala and many sub deities arises. The great Gautama the Buddha had the mogayalan, sariputra etc and 100 of disciples who were a great masters in their own right. A great teacher creates many students who are of great caliber.

Whether there will be vamsa for the spiritual tradition- for example the great naropa blesses the marpa and says” you will have great tradition like the river which will benefit sentient beings but your children will not be part of the lineage”. True to his words his sons dies and the great milarepa became successor of his lineage.

The adi shankara establish the dasanami order which is a great spiritual vamsa that has benefited many sentient beings

The great nath and aghoirs still have a great parampara.

There are other people who are super star by themselves but have not created any vamsa. A good example is Bhagwan Ramana who does not have spiritual lineage. Many people claim but officially does not have any vamsa.

The good example is swami muktananda who has guru mayi has his successor. The great ramdas ashram has mother Krishna bai, swami sachinanada and then swami muktananda.

Teaching - Some people are very good in practice but they can not teach. For example I would consider master choa as a great man in teaching spiritual concept. This is not there in many traditions. Some of great spiritual super star are not good teachers. Just that god did not give them gift. that is all.

Sadhana – many people feel sadhana has to be done alone. For some it is true. The great Ramakrishna had done sadhana in the presence of people. The more he opened his sadhana greater was his growth. For some people one needs to keep the sadhana as gupt which means secret. The great milarepa did his sadhana in caves. These days it is better to practice as a group. Initially there will be problems but as time goes by one will see huge benefits.

Women do sadhana in following ways- As consort to the great teacher. The great guru padmasambhava has 5 consorts out of which the great yeshe sogal become his lineage keeper. The great mirabhai considered Krishna has her husband or the great andal considered the great Vishnu as a consort. Women either find a guru or deity to fall in love. That is all. Their energy goes to another level. There is another way like that of mother Theresa or mata amritanamayi who is mother to any one and every one which is also very good sadhana.

How will be great being will be remembered- time is best judge. The seal of time is memory of the people. The great meditators are remembered in different ways.

  • For teaching – example is Krishna, the mahavira the great Buddha
  • For miracles – the great bhawan nityananda who had cured blindness.
  • For their work – the great ramnujam established the vistadvitha.the great adhi shankara for the dasanami order of saint.
  • For their poetry- mira bhai and the great kabir.
  • For there stories example is rama Krishnan parmahamsa stories. The great Rama charita manas by the great tulsidas.
  • For there miraculous life or how god came and helped in their life - sakubhai who went to vridanvan and the lord Krishna works as a servant on her behalf.
The great work- the great guru padam sambhava dakini teaching, the great bhagvad geetha,
  • For the tapasya- example of many asuras or the great milarepa who was remembered for heroic in sadhana.
  • Part of the history - the great chisti who was guru for Akbar, the samratha ramdas the guru of the great shivaji, the great gnaasambhadar who was guru to the cholas king.
Many people ask me how do I write all this stuff.. See the words of my teacher which will inspire any one.

One night I met my teacher who said “yes I want enlightenment and I want complete enlightement samyuku sambudhaya. The complete enlightenment in all the three kayas. Like the great guru padmasambhava what an aspiration. Many people want to become amabani’s or great musician or have Material success.

He told me when god meets me he should not say I have not searched him enough or have not given up everything for his sake

When everyone wanted to go to America and settle down he left a green card wife and children to settle down in his sadhana. Very few people have understood him or met him.

Whem one has a teacher like him no wonder the output is also wonderful.

May I dedicate this merit to my spiritual growth and practice, longevity of my teacher sensei kirtie.
May I become instrument of god and every one who meet, sees, hears and read my works or talks of me may they all be spiritually uplifted benefited and move into another dimension in their spirtual life.
