THE SPIRITUAL PATH

There is lot of confusion on spirituality these days. Many people ask me what is the right spiritual path? Finding your own spiritual path is like getting into marriage. So many choices need to be made unconsciously. Don’t get me wrong? The process is tricky and takes lot of courage to walk in that path.

First question you have ask yourself is- whether do you want follow religion of your parent’s or not? This is a very important question to the western people. They change jobs, spouses and including their own religion. If the answer is yes and you want follow your parent’s religion then most of the problems get solved. If  the answer is no then you will need to go for a bigger search.

Second question is whether you want to follow the intellectual path or you want to follow path of the heart. Intellectual path is advaitha, kriya yoga, kundalini yoga or you want to go in for bhakthi yoga.

Now the other question is - whether you want to continue your spiritual practice as a householder or bachelor. This is an important question, as the commitments, duties and responsibility really will take a toll in your life.

Do you want to serve the society? This is basically in the Buddhism comes as Hinayana or Mahayana. Hinayana means meditating lone and cutting away from society. In Christianity this is called as cloister. Of course people do say that serving people is better but for start and middle level, it is better to be alone and do sadhana.

Next question what kind of guru you want to follow? Do you want a single guru or multiple gurus? Many people have many gurus or inspiration. Mostly guru will come to your level of true intention, your past live vasanas and willingness to break free from maya. Many gurus these days are public speakers, Entertainers and sooth Sayers.

The most important criteria is whether are you growing spiritually and becoming calmer person. Some of the gurus advocate the path of tantra, which is very good inherently, but it like driving car in 300 miles speed. Very many people learn to drive a car but only few people can become a race driver. The process of tantra is like driving a racecar and only few people will have ability and instinct to do it.

Now if you are following bhakthi yoga you will have to choose a deity. This can be done by following one’s own family deity or deity of one’s own inclination.

The following of deity has 5 paths. The vaisnavism, the shivates, the shaktas, the murgas, the ganpathayas(worshipper of ganapathy or  hanuman) . Worshipping of spirits, ancestors can give occult powers but never real liberation.

From this path one can choose the deity. This basically is a divine play and mostly the form and name of divine chooses the person. Every form and name will lead to god ultimately. To cut short of this confusion, Christianity has made only one form as mandatory and prayers of Jesus as one way. It helps people to become very clear.

One more problem is how much do you want to be involved with the worldly people and the worldly activity. There is a proportion. One can leave the world fully because one depends the world for food clothing and shelter.

world

spiritual
100% 0%
90% 10%
80% 20%
70% 30%
60% 40%
50% 50%
40% 60%
30% 70%
20% 80%
10% 90%

In each level normal activity of the world like seeing TV, chatting in telephone, reading papers, etc should go.

Basically it means number of hours you will put in your spiritual life. Each level u want to increase is 2 hours. That means 10% will be 2 hours.

Basically more than 8 hours of religious life u will become very professional mediator.

Work like priest, art like dance music or like astrologer medicine man helps in this path of religion. But one has to break the mould of searching for money and fame and make god as centre of ones own life.

Easier said than done.

Number of years before one starts seeing results will be 15- 20 years. Of course this looks long. Buddha required 6 years to become an avatar, arunagiri nathar required 15 years, the great ramalinga swami required more than 10 years. So please understand for such great people it took more time to reach a platform in spirituality. So imagine for ordinary people.

Basically we see the world as follows.

  • World is happy and we have to make money, power, lands and buildings. This is worldly look.

  • The aim of life is liberation. This is higher way of looking.

  • The whole worldly activity will lead only to suffering is clearer look.

  • Then the seeing world people as divine embodied in different form is highest look.

Looking at women following ways .

  • As divine being.

  • As holy mother.

  • As your own mother, sister or child.

  • As wife, friend etc.

  • As sexual object.

Looking money

  • As way of liberation.

  • Source of pain and suffering.

  • As divine gift to help others.

  • As a way of security and safety.

  • As means of exploiting people and bringing happiness to oneself.

All world objects and people can be seen in three ways.

  • Satvic means of liberation.

  • Rajasic – as way of bringing happiness to others and to oneself.

  • Tamasic as way of bringing happiness to self and misery to others.

Every religion prepares its house holder in to spiritual life by prescribing a series of fast, festivals, some kind of routine one can follow initially to form a habit. By following these one’s own worldly life will be easy.

If you have major karmic problem like loss of job or ill health or lack of baby or marriage, then this can be used a major leap of consciousness and perfect the art of meditation.
