There is high and low in stock markets, in sports, in career. This simple truth even holds good for sadhana.   To meditate consistently one require lot of awareness, give up certain preferences. This will help to come out of the high and low of sadhana.

Many people have given up sadhana and have become guru because of their inability to meditate in consistent manner. It is very easy to preach, lecture, write books about sadhana but doing sadhana requires lot of understanding, determination awareness and discipline.

Your capacity to meditate must be in harmony with your appetite. Many a times an enthusiastic beginner wants fast results. So they set high goals and will not be able to do it consistently. For example some one can meditate for two hours, setting goals for four hours only will lead to frustration. Meditation as a capacity needs to be build up slowly.

Expect healing crisis to happen even if one meditates continuously for seven days. The old karmic slush will get cleaned up. This means your habits, character and attitude which had been creating pain to oneself and others will come into the fore and confront you. If you clear that only then it will be easier to flow in to meditation.

Take any meditation goal as a challenge to finish it. Instead of worrying and cursing one self, find ways you can solve the problems. Give up things which do not help you to reach the meditation goals.

  • Lower the minimum target and try to reach it consistently. For example make it one mala for ten days instead of making it as 50 malas and feeling negative when you cannot reach that goal.

  • Check for the food. This will tell you a lot on where you are going wrong. For example place. I am sensitive by nature to food.  Eating outside as a person makes my mind heavy, polluted, pick up arguments and lose my focus on meditation. It took nearly 60 malas and visit to a temple and lighting lamp to reduce the impact.

  • Check for working atmosphere. Some times digestion of the day’s events will take time.

  • Check for your conduct and see whom you have hurt or created difficulties etc.  Other person’s thought waves can create disturbances in your astral body. There fore when you are doing sadhana make sure you do not hurt others.

  • Tell people what to expect of you. Make it clear that you will not compromise on your sadhana on any account.

Many people try to define sadhana and the path. It is very good in the initial stages but in the long run these definitions becomes arbitrary and every thing blends and mends. For example advitha or Vedanta is a path. But then they don’t give importance to bhakthi, yoga and karma. Slowly as vedantian progresses, he /she will realize the value of the other path and also will expose themselves. They will also have to check the common points between their path and other paths. For example a bhakthi man will see how doing yoga will help him with his postures and gnana aspect to help him to refine the technique.

Karma yoga men will realizes that doing work for bhakthi intent will be very helpful. Therefore bhakthi, gnana and karma yoga are just the different aspects of the same flower. If gods is one then these path are not cut and well defined but are blended and merged.

god with form or with out form is another big debate or confusion- the sadhaka as he /she progress will come to an understanding that the god in essence is formless. But god in his attributes has several forms. For example the cup is empty inside but the colors, shape and material will vary. Therefore one can choose essence or attributes. If one chooses essence then they will slowly come to the attribute. If someone start their sadhana on the attributes then they will progress towards the essence.

God is one or many- my wife is a Christian and she will see her Christ even in permual temple or shiva temple. For her Christ will come in different forms. So if you are confused on many deities, see your issta devata as a manifestation all deities.

Deity worshipped as inner or outer aspects- the outer aspects like pooja, homam and abhsikeam is done for the inner aspects to be strengthened. For example words can be used as pooja, eating as homam the fire of the jatara agni is the food. The abshisekam is the bath you have. If you see every one as ur issta devata and people coming, meeting and relating with you as your ishta devata. then the devata has come inside you. Sri Ravi Shankar says beautifully that if you do not see the person standing in front of you as the embodiment of divine, then how anyone will see the formless god. First see god in form then u can see in formless.

Teachers- when the ego sublimates, then everyone who come to meet you will carry the message of god. They will become channels in unknowing manner. Start taking a person as your guru is wonderful, but then one needs take the whole world as your guru. Then you will see god sending subtle test, problems and difficulties to expose your limitation and increase the faith. Then the whole world will become the tool that carries the message of god.

dviata ,adviata and vistadviata- these just the three aspects of god, god as other, god as self and god as every thing. One will flow from one bhava to another. These are not vasinavite or hindu philosophy but three aspects of god. Slowly bhoga and dhayna becomes the same-my teacher calls this state as   prayer without ceassing. Bhoga means enjoyment of sensual pleasure and dhyana means controlling the senses. Bhoga is sensual pleasure minus god. Bhoga plus god is gnana i.e.: is sensual pleasure plus god. The chanting becomes so sweet that mouth becomes sweet and this is what all the great musicians experience.
