Guru is the biggest role in the game of spirituality. We can define in modern terms as coach or consultant. Many people talk to me and feel lot of confusion with the roles and rules of the game. Let me clarify for a start that I am not any one’s guru.

There are many types of guru depending on the people, situations needs and many of them have
different method of awakening their disciples. The greatest guru is life itself and the greatest teacher is daily situations and people.

Any guru will stress the following

  • The philosophy- normally this will be universal in nature. all religion path and ways will lead to god. Some of them are narrow because of personal experience or due to limited way of thinking and reality
  • The method- like that of Swami Ramdas Or Prabu Pada  founder of ISCKON are very good example.
  • Practice - where one has set of routines which you need to practice every day.
  • The values- like truth, honesty, being joyful etc. like Ravi Shankar and modern guru
the tradition- like the adviathan guru

Some of them are experimental and non traditional like j Krishnamurthy, osho, etc. guru in terms of people can be classified as the Indian one, the western one and the mixed type. Some of the gurus are excellent in teaching and some of them prefer silence and less interaction. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Many of the Indian guru act as counselor, buffer, solver of personal problem, guide, forewarner of problems, astrologer for many families and individual. Many of them will not take personal decision with out consultation. Some of them act as healer and can cure some fatal disease. Very rarely people talk on enlightment. The bhakti aspect is stressed by Indian gurus the gnanas aspect by the westerners.

For western people guru is like sports men, writers. Basically life problems will get solved by your own effort along with the guidelines from the guru. It is like a student who studies well will find school and teacher is also helpful. Many people are of the wrong notion that guru will clear their spiritual problems.

  • I have some rules which acted as my guide line.
  • Always follow teacher advice.
  • Following advice or following heart. Become very clear and then follow your heart.
  • Do not waste time in chit chatting or gossiping with him.
  • If you do not have any queries sit in his presence or chant prayers
  • thank him mentally for all good things he has done.
  • If you see practice is not progressing, try hard. If it does not work try for few times then only take your practice to extreme level.
  • Be sincere with teacher and do not manipulate or oppose them out of ego.
  • If you see some limitation it is only human. Just like there are no perfect parents there are also no perfect teachers.
  • If you have some material problem then ask for remedy provided you use it.
  • Treat every person who comes to you as a messenger from guru.
  • Do not speak ill of guru of any traditions.
  • Never follow guru life style.
  • Disagreeing with guru and insulting them or playing rebel games or slandering them in public should not be there.
  • Differences with guru are natural but if the issue is about morality or values then be careful.
  • Take inspiration of any one who does sadhana.
  • Follow your path and learn to integrate best principles of other school of thoughts in a best manner.
  • Have faith in god and trust in guru and do not do it vice versa.

QUOTES ON TEACHER-

v      It is rare to find teacher like ramakrishna or ramana maharishi or yukteswar. By nature good teacher are silent, deep and more interested in personal evolution- venkat.

v      My friend venkat said aptly by nature sadhana is being alone and doing things alone. Very rarely a great soul will come to teach to masses. If we come across gurus like that then they are exceptions.

v      Another friend vijay told very clearly that there is god appointed guru and self appointed guru meaning one appoints oneself as guru. If you have role and calling of becoming guru it will happen naturally. One need not promote and do marketing and public relations.

v      When one becomes guru due to one’s own ego, then sexual misconduct and scandals will be natural.

v      Disciples are shadow side of teacher and students are shadow side of teacher.  said a Jungian psychologist.

v      No teacher has all answers or perfected every thing. Students are subtle teachers for the guru. a guru who does not learn is  sign post -= senesei kirtie.

Till we reach the final step of evolution with atma anu bhuthi
